Join us for a concert highlighting the music of Billie Holiday featuring the BackCountry Jazz Allstars. Following on last October’s Louis Armstrong Month series of events, Greenwich Library and BackCountry Jazz are planning a concert to honor the great Lady Day. Billie Holiday was one of the true giants of jazz and an immensely influential vocalist. Her distinctive behind the beat phrasing has been appropriated by legions of jazz singers, but the emotional impact of her own recordings remains unique. Although her life was beset by tragedy, she has left a luminous recorded legacy.
Just as Billie’s music was created in company with jazz icons such as Lester Young, Teddy Wilson, Count Basie and Artie Shaw, the October 12 concert will feature some of today’s most in demand players including trumpeter Terrel Stafford, bassist Peter Washington and pianist Donald Vega. The band will be led by Greenwich’s own tenor saxophone master, Bennie Wallace. who has been releasing critically acclaimed albums since the 1970’s.
