Anthony Amore, Director of Security at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Mass., will be speaking on “Stealing Rembrandts,” a history of art heists involving the works of the great Dutch painter and etcher. Amore’s lecture will include details about the unsolved Gardner museum heist in 1990, when two thieves disguised as policemen stole 13 pieces of artwork, valued at $500 million, from the museum during the late hours of St. Patrick’s Day. The thieves stole a Rembrandt painting called “The Storm on the Sea of Galilee,” as well as pieces by Vermeer, Degas and Manet. All 13 pieces remain missing to date. Amore has been leading efforts to track down the missing artwork since he was hired at the museum in 2005. In March, the FBI announced they now know the identities of the thieves, but have yet to solve the crime.
