The Flinn Gallery opens its 2013/14 season with a reception for "All the Pretty Horses", large scale oils by Michael Manning.
Since 2000, Michael Manning has exhibited his works of art in both solo and group shows from Munich to Vienna, from New York to Cincinnati. Beginning September 12, he will be displaying his latest series of paintings “All the Pretty Horses” at the Flinn Gallery at the Greenwich Library. The exhibition opens with a reception from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. that evening.
A graduate of Philadelphia University of the Arts, the Connecticut resident also holds a master of fine arts degree from Montclair State University and appeared at another show at the Flinn a decade ago, together with sculptor, Pessi Margulies.
“A horse dominates a recent series of paintings and is sometimes combined with a human figure,” Manning says. “Appearing in awkward, unnatural positions, these forms become metaphors for human behavior, especially our depraved human tendencies. Faded, washed away and redrawn in multiple layers, my images create a visual language that suggests the dual and often contradictory sides of human behavior,” Manning adds. “The paintings are an ongoing balancing act between abstract and concrete imagery and convey a message without overtly telling a story.”
Manning uses bold silhouettes and dynamic lines in otherwise abstract environments in both bright and pastel colorations, with subtle, shadowy transparencies as he both draws and paints on his canvas.
The Flinn Gallery is on the second floor of the library at 101 West Putnam Avenue. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, with extended hours to 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays and from 1 p.m.to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. The Manning exhibition will continue to October 16.
