Set in 1916 France, the artist Edouard Lefevre leaves his young wife, Sophie, to fight at the front. When their small town falls to the Germans, Eduard's portrait of Sophie draws the Kommandant's eye. Sophie risks everything to see her husband again. The story picks up years later with a battle for ownership over the painting.
