Where do you begin and, is a nonprofit organization the right step for you to take? Participants will view the Pro Bono® Partnership’s video presentation narrated by Maurice Segall, Esq., entitled Starting a Nonprofit: Upsides, Downsides and Alternatives. Attorneys Segall and Carlton Chen will then discuss relevant issues affecting the operation and governance of nonprofits, followed by Q & A. Topics to be covered: What is the structure of a 501(c)(3) nonprofit? What are the burdens & benefits? What questions should you ask yourself? What will it cost to get one established? Are there yearly fees? What are the ingredients for success? Have you considered alternatives? About the Presenters: Attorney Chen is a Western Connecticut SCORE business advisor and a practicing business lawyer at Matthew Dallas Gordon LLC in West Hartford. He has represented companies of all sizes, from start-ups to Fortune 100 companies and nonprofits. He has served on Boards of several nonprofit organizations, including Connecticut Yankee Council, BSA, Connecticut Asian Pacific American Bar Association, Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute, and as Vice Chairman of the 450+ member West Hartford Chamber of Commerce. Attorney Segall is the Director of the New York and Fairfield County, CT Pro Bono Partnership Program. He provides direct legal services to nonprofit groups, coordinates and supervises the work of staff and volunteer attorneys, and frequently lectures on legal issues for nonprofits and attorneys. He has served on Boards of several nonprofit organizations, including the Wilton Library, Family and Children’s Agency, Connecticut Consortium for Law and has served on the Advisory Board for the Fairfield County’s Community Foundation Center for Nonprofit Excellence.
