Event Details

We are sorry, but due to the low registration, we are cancelling tonight's discussion. Join us on the first Tuesday of the month this fall for book discussions led by WCSU history professor Stephen Flanagan. Books will be available to check out one month in advance - ask at the circulation desk! October 4 Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam by James McPherson Celebrated Civil War historian James McPherson returns to the subject once again with an insightful treatment of the crucial battle of Antietam in September 1862. The consequences of the outcome of Antietam would cast long shadows on the direction of the war and on America's future. November 1 The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara Michael Shaara wrote what is perhaps the single best and most widely read novel of the Civil War. His sweeping, dramatic scenes and wonderful character development have given this beloved book a special place in Civil War literature. December 6 The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln & American Slavery by Eric Foner Professor Eric Foner has produced a masterful treatment of Abraham Lincoln's, and the nation's, long struggle to come to grips with the root cause of the war, slavery. No consideration of the war, its causes and legacy, can be complete without a thorough examination of the slave question such as Dr. Foner so ably provides in this book. About The Presenter: Stephen Flanagan, a Danbury resident,  is retired from a long career teaching high school history. His enthusiasm for exploring the past remains undiminished. For the past thirty years he has been an adjunct lecturer in the History Department at Western Connecticut State University,
