The consequences of the outcome of Antietam would cast long shadows on the direction of the war and on America's future. November 1 The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara Michael Shaara wrote what is perhaps the single best and most widely read novel of the Civil War. His sweeping, dramatic scenes and wonderful character development have given this beloved book a special place in Civil War literature. December 6 The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln & American Slavery by Eric Foner Professor Eric Foner has produced a masterful treatment of Abraham Lincoln's, and the nation's, long struggle to come to grips with the root cause of the war, slavery. No consideration of the war, its causes and legacy, can be complete without a thorough examination of the slave question such as Dr. Foner so ably provides in this book.
